Summer holidays are about getting out of the city and into the country, and there are few counties that are as picturesque as Warwickshire. Just up the road from Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon – Shakespeare country – is a tiny town called Henley-in-Arden, where railway visionary William James was born back in 1771. Apart from beautiful landscapes, there’s some fantastic driving roads in the area, and we’ve found this great little food stop where you can fill up your tummy and recharge the batteries.
The Henley-in-Arden branch of Finest Catch we visited, is one of three in the West Midlands, with others located in Shirley, near Birmingham, and another at Tipton, Staffordshire. Formerly a pub, it has been extensively refurbished inside to look like a 50’s roadside diner, with a distinct American flavour, yet there’s a British twist added in, too. Fish and Chips is the speciality of the house, with a choice of either haddock or cod, smaller or regular, and bread and butter is served alongside. The batter was crispy, the fish a good size, and a decent portion of chips, too. The management boast that no-one leaves the restaurant hungry, and so seconds of chips are offered for free. There’s a choice of burgers, pies and ribs, and there’s even a selection of options for vegetarians, too. But leave room for dessert, as there’s a wide selection of different ice creams, cakes and pastries, including retro choices like knickerbocker glory and banana split, to finish off the meal. We chose the strawberry cheesecake, and a large wedge arrived, which was exceptional value considering the modest £2.75 asking price.
There’s a large car park, and the staff are on hand to meet and greet you and escort you to your table. Service is friendly, food is delivered quickly and the whole American 50s theme lends a touch of excitement to the atmosphere. If you want a great tasting meal that is pretty good on the pocket, if not the waistline, then you’re in for a treat, and it’s well worth a visit.
