The third-generation of Skoda Octavia has been given its first major refresh, with a move to a twin headlight design, updated infotainment systems and improved smartphone connectivity along with new driver assistance technology.

Skoda’s best-seller now features two adjacent full-LED headlights influenced by crystal, along with a more prominent badge at the leading edge of the bonnet. The Octavia’s rear lines have also been sharpened up to bring them in line with the design of the larger Skoda Superb.

Despite competing with family hatchbacks including the Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra, the Octavia is still one of the largest cars in its class, with a 590-litre boot in the saloon, while the Estate gets 610 litres.

Three new infotainments systems will be introduced, called – Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus, which differ from their predecessors thanks to glass capacitive displays requiring only a light touch. The range-topping Columbus has a 9.2-inch display, WiFi hotspot and can be fitted with a SIM card providing high-speed internet access.

Towing should be easier too, with Skoda’s ‘trailer assistant’ taking over steering duties when reversing at low speeds. More radar sensors around the car also bring Blind Spot Detection and Rear Traffic Alert, the second of which makes reversing out of parking spaces safer. Not only that, but the Octavia’s Front Assist radar has been updated to include predictive pedestrian protection.

The roster of Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ design touches has grown also, with a customisable key which can recognise multiple users and save their vehicle settings, a heated steering wheel, bottle holders which allow you to open drinks with one hand and a removable boot in the Estate’s boot compartment.

Two diesel engines will be available, the tried and tested 1.6-litre TDI with 113bhp and a 2.0-litre TDI with 148bhp, available with manual or dual-clutch automatic gearboxes.

Full pricing and specifications are expected closer to the Octavia going on sale from the end of the year, but should remain close to the current line-up. First deliveries are expected from early 2017.
