It was time to up sticks and move to a new house this month, so itís no exaggeration to say I was glad the Mazda6 was a Tourer, rather than the saloon. It was certainly a much more enjoyable way to transport goods than the rental van drafted in to shift the washing machine, sofa and wardrobe. Instead, the Mazda was perfect for transporting the more delicate items, like our flat-screen television and crockery, smoothing out speed bumps like a Rolls-Royce Phantom in comparison.
With 522 litres of space behind the rear seats, the 6 Tourer doesnít offer quite as much luggage space as the Volkswagen Passat Estate (650 litres), but itís usefully bigger than a BMW 3 Series Touring or Audi A4 Avant and within 17 litres of the new Volvo V60. Check that thereís nothing obstructing the back seats, pull a handle at each side of the boot and the seats flip gracefully forwards to open up 1,664 litres. Itís a well thought out space too, with a low and wide loading lip, flat floor and handy cubby spaces behind the rear wheel arches, where Iím keeping odds and ends like an ice scraper and cleaning cloth. The roller-style parcel shelf is a bit of a fiddle to remove though, and I was slightly perplexed by the lack of boot illumination for the first few trips in the dark, thinking surely Mazdaís designers couldnít have forgotten such a basic feature. Of course they hadnít; itís actually located on the inside of the tailgate and was switched off when the car arrived. Once you reach up and the switch is flipped on, it shines down on your luggage rather effectively.
On the subject of illumination, the puddle lights found under all four doors are a welcome feature during the gloomy and wet winter months, helping avoid stepping in roadside puddles of the watery kind. Our GT Sport Nav+ model comes with Mazdaís Safety Pack as standard ñ a worthwhile £800 option for Sport Nav+ cars ñ that includes a handy 360-degree camera, adaptive LED headlights, autonomous emergency braking and a driver fatigue alert. The LEDs offer a particularly bright and wide beam when dipped and feature a ëhighway modeí that raises the beam at high speeds and shines 80 metres further ahead than those in the older model. Each headlamp has 20 blocks of light that can be individually illuminated, tracking oncoming cars and traffic and lighting the dark verges around them without blinding other drivers.
Now, this may be rather geeky, but I also love the fact that when you turn the headlight stalk to ëoffí, all the lights really do switch off, even with the engine running. As someone who finds blinding daytime running lights and rear lamps annoying when you just want to park up somewhere for a few minutes with the ignition turned on, itís rather refreshing not to be lit up like a Christmas tree. Iím quickly learning that when it comes to Mazda ownership, itís all about the little details that put a smile on my face.
