Back in the March 1986 issue of Diesel Car and 4×4, the headline test was the Rover 220SDI
The cover proclaimed the baby Rover as “It’s a cracker”, while the testers remarked: “A big engine in a small car has long been an effective formula for effortless performance and good economy. The new 220 SDi provides both – and a lot more besides.” (We get the feeling that they rather liked it!) The Ford Galaxy was pitched up against the Renault Espace, and despite its age, the French people carrier put up a good fight, but in the end, the Volkswagen Sharan clone won. There were also first tests of the all-wheel-drive Audi A6 Avant 2.5 TDI quattro and upmarket Range Rover 2.5DSE. Jeep’s new Grand Cherokee was given the first drive treatment, alongside the tiny Daihatsu Hijet 1.2 diesels.
