It’s a rather cruel twist of fate that new diesel car sales have fallen so much over the last 18 months or so, just as the cleanest ever Euro 6d-Temp diesels have hit the market. Many former diesel owners obviously switched to buying petrol and alternative fuel cars, but around 200,000 to 250,000 diesel owners, private and business, seemingly just held onto theirs, instead of buying a new one. What better time than now for the Government to give the ailing British car industry a boost by initiating jointly funded scrappage grants for trading in dirty pre-Euro-5 diesels against new Euro 6d-Temp ones? Ignoring the problem merely extends the delay before these older ìdirtyî diesels get taken off the roads, so why not now?
