Euro NCAP reveal the best of 2013

Each year, Euro NCAP puts dozens of cars to the test to see just how safe they are. With 2013 now behind us, Euro NCAP have revealed the top seven cars it tested during the year. 

They’re split into six categories, supermini, small family car, large family car, small MPV, small off-road, 4×4 and executive.

Here are the cars.

100114ren-bSupermini: Renault ZOE
The ZOE scored 89% for adult occupancy, 80% for child and 66% for pedestrian safety. Euro NCAP said of the ZOE ” Dummy readings indicated good protection of all body regions for the passenger, and for all of the driver’s body regions apart from the chest, protection of which was adequate.”

NCAP’s winner in the small family car class isn’t even available Europe yet but that didn’t stop it taking top honours. Euro NCAP said the Qoros “indicated good protection of all body regions for the passenger. Protection of the knees and femurs was good for the driver and passenger”

100114lex-aLarge family car: Lexus IS 300h
Lexus took top honours for Japan, with Euro NCAP noting “The car scored maximum points in the side barrier test, providing good protection to all parts of the body. Even in the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was adequate and that of other body regions was good.”

kiafSmall MPV: Kia Carens and Ford Tourneo Connect
Two cars share the prize in this class, with Kia’s Carens and Ford’s Tourneo Connect doing well in testing. NCAP’s report on the Carens said “In the side barrier test, the Carens scored maximum points, showing good protection of all body regions” while of the Ford they said “the Tourneo Connect scored maximum points with good protection of all body regions. In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was adequate and that of other body regions was good.”

74134jeeSmall off-road 4×4: Jeep Cherokee
Representing the United States, the Jeep Cherokee won the Small off-road class. Euro NCAP said “In the side impact barrier test, the Cherokee scored maximum points with good protection of all body regions.”

Maserati’s first diesel is Euro NCAP’s best executive car of 2013. Euro NCAP’s report on the Ghibli said “Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Maserati showed that a similar level of protection would be available to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. In the side barrier test, the Ghibli scored maximum points.”
