Every month we take an in-depth look at the used cars made by key diesel car manufacturers
Citroën Brand Values
Citroën’s range of cars mixes style, innovative technology and class-leading safety features with value for money. Citroëns tend to be cheaper than many rivals and their franchised dealers often offer very attractive deals on finance, cashback and discounts too. Many models are very economical to run, as well as to buy, and Citroën work hard to promote their environmental credentials, currently boasting Europe’s best-selling sub-110g/km CO2 vehicle – the Citroën C1.

Citroën Approved Used Cars
Buying a Approved Used Car guarantees you the very best warranty cover on the market for your Citroën
Citroën feel that their Approved Used Car scheme is one of the best in the business, and with some justification. As Ian Hughes, Marketing Director, Citroën UK Ltd explains: “Unlike many other manufacturer schemes, Citroën actually provides the warranty cover, rather than relying on a third party to do so, as a result the Citroën Approved Used warranty is effectively the equivalent of new car cover.” Not only that, but Citroën often include older, and highermileage vehicles, with cars up to seven years or 75,000 miles eligible for the programme. As with other schemes, Citroën offer warranty extensions after 12 months, “And these are extendable for up to two or three years” Ian emphasizes. “In addition all cars come with 12-months Citroën Roadside Assistance.” In fact the only possible omission in terms of customer benefits seems to be the lack of MoT Test failure cover. But all used cars come with up to 12-months MoT in any case.

Buying a used Citroën
Historically, used Citroëns have provided cheap and comfortable motoring, but sometimes at the expense of reliability. And whilst more modern diesel models undoubtedly provide less risk of a breakdown, many have still suffered niggling electrical and trim problems, making a decent warranty an essential prerequisite. The automatic gearboxes have also come in for some criticism and you would be well advised to stick to manual variants to be on the safe side. Servicing and parts are normally inexpensive, and there are plenty of independent garages familiar with working on Citroëns.
The very first manufacturer to offer a commonrail powered car in the UK, Citroën now produces HDi engines ranging from a 55bhp 1.4-litre unit, through to a 208bhp 2.7-litre V6. State-of-the-art design and technology, including things like an efficient and reliable self-regenerating particulate filter and twin sequential turbos, have kept its HDi range at the forefront of diesel design. Citroën HDi engines have CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km and all can run on up to 30 per cent bio-diesel without modification.
