A really strong car advert not only helps sell cars, but can become a real talking point and live on long after the car is no longer on sale.
Here, Diesel Car picks out its top five car adverts.
1. Peugeot: 405 Take My Breath Away
Peugeot was a company on top form when this advert for the 405 hit TV screens. The image of the burning cane fields provided a striking visual back drop, while the 80s-tastic sounds of ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin provided the perfect backing track. The song would go on to feature on several other 405 ads into the 1990s.
2. Ford: Everything we do is driven by you
Part of a series of ads from the early 1990s, this memorable campaign featured a song especially composed for Ford by Queen’s Brian May. The advert does a wonderful job of convincing the viewer that Ford really does care about each and every customer because, like the songs says, ‘Everything we do is driven by you…’
3. Skoda: Favourite things
The Skoda ‘Favourite things’ advert was one you couldn’t ignore. A brilliant advert that became a genuine ‘have you seen’ moment. Wonderfully done, the company followed it up with another ace Fabia ad, ‘Mean Green‘ this time for the sporty Fabia vRS. A great ad campaign.
4. Citroen: C4 Transformer
Directed by Hollywood director Neil Blomkamp, these adverts felt heavily influenced by the 80’s cartoon (and later film series) Transformers. We all like to think of our cars as alive, and who doesn’t like cool robots that can ice skate, or dance?
5. Honda: Cog
Honda have a real knack for creating memorable car ads, be it ‘The Impossible Dream’ or the ‘Hate something, change something’ the Japanese company has come up with some ace ads in recent years. None more so than ‘Cog’. A clever ad that’s all about cause and effect. Incredibly, it was shot in one take and whole thing is totally genuine, using parts from the Accord.
