Estate cars have always been popular.
Offering increased practicality over their hatch or saloon equivalents, there have been some superb diesel estates over the years. Here’s Diesel Car’s top 5 load-luggers.
1. Peugeot 508 RXH
As a hybrid, the RXH really does offer the best of all worlds. Stylish, spacious, comfortable and practical. Add in Peugeot’s excellent diesel hybrid system and by combing a diesel engine with an electric motor and stop/start technology, the RXH is capable of some truly stunning miles-per-gallon figures.
It’s easy to see the Exeo as little more than Audi’s left-overs. However the SEAT estate is much more than that. SEAT’s stylists have managed to inject plenty of Spanish flair into those clinical German lines and with the addition of the 2.o TDi and six-speed ‘box it’s a cracking drive. What’s not to like?
3. Volvo V70
Volvo’s estate cars are the thing of legends and the V70 continues that tradition in fine style. Incredibly safe, as strong a tank and as dependable as the family dog. The V70 adds a dash of style to the blend too. With all these points in its favour, it’s hardly surprising that many consider a Volvo as the quintessential estate car.
4. MINI Clubman
Though it’s perhaps not big enough to be a true estate car, the Clubman has a lot to offer. It makes up for its lack of load space with it cool factor. With neat rear doors reminiscent of the original Austin Mini Countryman and Morris Mini Traveller, the Clubman keeps all of the MINI’s fun-loving spirit but manages to add a dash of extra usability.
Not only does the Mondeo estate look superb but it also pack a huge amount of load space. Want an Estate that’s great looking, great to drive and big enough to swallow everything and the kitchen sink? The Mondeo’s the car for you…
