Bentley has revealed the first ever luxury sports utility vehicle in the history of the British brand, and while launch models will all feature a 600bhp 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine, a clean diesel engine has been confirmed, arriving at a later date. Seven-seat editions will also join the line-up later, as well as plug-in hybrid technology.

The four-wheel-drive luxury SUV also marks the first time that a diesel powertrain has been available under the bonnet of a Bentley vehicle, reflecting the dominance of diesel power in the SUV sector. Prices haven’t been revealed for the new car, but it is expected to be priced at a level that sits above the most expensive Range Rover long wheelbase, despite being similar in size.

For now, Bentley is remaining silent about the diesel engine that it will use under the bonnet of the Bentayga, however, it is expected that it will share technology with Audi, with sightings of what is expected to be a flagship SQ7 TDI at the Nürburgring race track. Rumours suggest that Bentley will use that engine as a basis for its first ever diesel powerplant.

The Bentayga will be publically unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show next week, with the first deliveries of W12 editions to customers set for early next year. Diesel power, as well as plug-in hybrid editions will follow at a later date.
