Peugeot moves upmarket with new 308

Peugeot 308 - FrontThe Peugeot designers and engineers have created a hatchback that is audacious, intuitive and modern, to a refined and classy design.

Due to the new EMP2 modular platform, the new Peugeot 308 has compact dimensions and reduced weight (down by 140kg). Its driving experience is top-class and its CO2 emissions create a new benchmark (with a version at less than 85g/km). A refined interior and innovative instruments and controls (the Peugeot i-cockpit) promise a great driving experience. Its high level of quality, the result of a very ambitious initial design brief, positions the vehicle among the best, embodying Peugeot’s move up-market.

The new Peugeot 308 has all of the essential characteristics needed in the C segment, with its compact size (length: 4.25m and height: 1.46m), spacious interior and a particularly large boot (470 litres below the parcel shelf). It goes further, offering a strong and different alternative to win new customers.

“The new Peugeot 308, has a pure and technological exterior design that speaks of high-strength and high-quality”. Gilles Vidal, Peugeot’s Director of Style.

Peugeot 308 - RearDue to its compact size, its well-balanced proportions and its reduced weight, the new Peugeot 308 projects a classy and dynamic posture, like an athlete confident with power. Its character is confirmed by the care and quality applied in every detail.  The new Peugeot 308 possesses a strong lighting signature. At the front, slim Full-LED headlamps, expressive and chiselled like a piece of jewellery, define a feline and technological appearance. They are standard on the upper trim levels, a world first in the segment. The high quality of design continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot ‘claws’, drawn by the rear LED lamps which reinforce the car’s technological and dynamic image. The new Peugeot 308 carries within it, all of Peugeot’s recognised DNA values.

“When inside the car, one discovers a world of refined style, completely original in the world of hatchback cars, with a cockpit that is intense, innovative and intuitive; the Peugeot i-cockpit.” Says Vincent Devos, New 308 Product Manager.

The Peugeot i-cockpit offers a new kind of driving sensation. Everything is arranged for a driving experience that is intuitive and which touches the senses: a compact steering wheel for intense dynamic sensations, head-up instruments, so that information can be read without taking your eyes off the road, a notable tall centre console and a large 9.7’’ touch screen for intuitive driving. The latter brings many controls together in one place, for clear ease of use. This allowed the designers to create a very pure dashboard, with just a few buttons. This original approach, where purity meets technology, symbolised by the volume control button, handled in the manner of a fine Hi-Fi system.

“On the road, driving pleasure is enhanced by the new EMP2 modular platform. With its considerable reduction in weight, it contributes to the dynamism and easy handling of the new Peugeot 308”; says Laurent Declerck, New 308 Project Director.

Peugeot 308 - InteriorThe driving experience of the new Peugeot 308, enhanced by the small steering wheel, draws on Peugeot’s expertise in suspension and steering, with the added qualities of the new EMP2 platform. The latter, containing the very latest technology with 116 patent applications, contributes towards the vehicle’s excellent dynamic qualities.  It also plays a role in general comfort, through the use of numerous driving assistance systems and the car’s considerable weight reduction (140kg compared to the previous 308). This weight reduction is beneficial in the sizing of the vehicle’s major units and allows, among other things, big reductions in CO2 emissions. As a result, the new Peugeot 308 establishes new benchmarks, offering a model with CO2 emissions of less than 85g/km.

The new Peugeot 308 is the very embodiment of Peugeot’s intention to move up-market, started some years ago. Its initial design brief had at its core the highest level of quality. This ambition guided the designers and engineers from the very start of the project. Every element, both inside and outside, has been handled with elegance and great care. The instrument panel, for example, makes reference to high class watch-making and its design is evocative of technology and dynamism. The choice of high-quality materials and the satin chrome or gloss black finishers also contribute to this perception of quality.

The new Peugeot 308 will be produced in the Sochaux plant in France. The Trémery and Douvrin sites supply all of the power units.  The new Peugeot 308 will be presented for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 10th September 2013 and sales will start during autumn 2013 in Europe and January 2013 in the UK.
