SsangYong reveals diesel future

For the past 60 years, SsangYong Motor Company has developed high performance, highly fuel efficient, environmentally friendly diesel and petrol engines and powertrains that satisfy a variety of customer needs.

During the Geneva Motor Show, SsangYong will introduce its development strategy by releasing one new petrol engine and three new diesel engines which not only meet the EU5 and EU6 emission standards but also improve engine efficiency by lowering CO2 emissions and enhancing torque at low-mid engine speeds. Through intelligent, compact engine design, SsangYong Motor has vastly improved NVH performance with technology that can be applied to SUV and premium passenger cars as well as hybrid models, which are already planned for future development.  Engines have also been developed to allow both transverse and longitudinal mounting.

The 2.0L and 2.2L diesel engines and 2.0L petrol engine are being developed as a Family Engine Concept. A 2-Stage Turbocharger diesel engine and Turbocharger petrol engine both offer improved power and low-mid range torque with the downsizing benefit of greatly reduced CO2 emissions. These engines will be available in Premium passenger cars in the future to maximize efficiency.

The Eco-friendly petrol and diesel engines which will be on display are as follows:

l FR 2.0 Active Diesel engine
l FF 2.0 Green Diesel engine
l FR 2.2 2-Stage Turbocharger Diesel engine
l FF 2.0 Turbocharger Petrol engine

In order to maximize driver enjoyment, SsangYong’s Active Diesel engine was developed to enhance torque at low-mid engine speeds rather than focusing purely on high power delivery. Torque at low-mid engine speeds has been improved by 20%, while a wide, flat torque curve ensures excellent responses in all conditions. An electronically controlled turbocharger also optimises the intake and exhaust system to guarantee ample high speed power. Through the use of a 1800bar intelligent common rail system, electric EGR and CDPF, the Active Diesel engine meets strict EU5 emission standards. What’s more, a low pressure/low temperature EGR and DeNOx system will be applied to meet the EU6 emission standards.

Durability has also been vastly improved compared to previous generation engines through the intelligent design of a compact cylinder block, cylinder head, crank train, oil filter module.  Also, through the implementation of a Common Design Concept, both transverse and longitudinal mounting are possible.

The aim of the Green Diesel engine has been to achieve the very best eco-friendliness and fuel efficiency. Along with a variable oil pump, switchable water pump, map control thermostat, ESP, EEM, and low-viscosity oil, a significant reduction in friction losses has been achieved by optimising the design of mechanical parts. As a result, CO2 emissions fall by 30% compared to the previous generation engine. NVH and vehicle dependability are also much improved through the thorough engineering of the balance shaft, isolation damper and multiple injection, while a maintenance-free poly grooved one belt and timing chain drive have been fitted. This not only increases the time between oil changes by 30% compared to the previous generation engines, but also improves maintainability by applying an element exchange type oil filter.

The 2-Stage Turbocharger Diesel engine has been developed to meet the varying needs of SsangYong customers and to offer premium diesel performance in a downsized package. With a small turbocharger for low/medium speeds and a large turbocharger for high speed, a low compression ratio, and a 2000bar common rail system, the engine delivers low end torque of 270Nm and maximum torque of 500Nm. Peak power is 225PS. Like the Active Diesel engine, with the addition of a low pressure/low temperature EGR and DeNOx system the 2-Stage Turbocharger Diesel engine will also meet the EU6 emission standards. The 2-Stage Turbocharger Diesel engine will be the perfect match for a premium saloon, offering strong performance and excellent efficiency for drivers downsizing from a larger engine.
