September has proved a bumper month for Vauxhall with a hat-trick of successes in the UK’s top-five best-selling car league, and a total market share of 12.6 per cent according to latest figures from the Society of Car Manufacturers and Traders. Vauxhall’s top seller was the Corsa (14,249 sales), followed by the Astra and Insignia ranges.
Bolstered by the popularity of the new Astra hatch, the Astra range is yet again a market leader in the lower-medium sector, with sales of 12,465 cars last month. The Astra range also topped in-segment sales in the retail sector (15.74 per cent), as well as the fleet sector (19.70 per cent), illustrating its appeal to both private and fleet buyers.
The European Car of the Year-winning Insignia was another sales winner, dominating the mid-size sector with 18.8 per cent of sales, as well as being the fifth best-selling passenger car in the UK – a remarkable feat for a car in this class. The Insignia’s appeal has also seen a significant growth in the retail sector, which now accounts for 31 per cent of all its sales. This compares with 15 per cent for the Ford Mondeo, 20 per cent for the VW Passat and 26 per cent for the BMW 3-series.
Also showing no signs of a decline in popularity was Vauxhall’s evergreen Zafira, which not only clinched the top spot overall in the compact MPV sector, but also commanded the top slot in both the retail and fleet listings.
“September is obviously a crucial month for car sales,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “Yet again, models like the Insignia and Astra have proved immensely popular to a broad cross-section of buyers, with the Insignia’s appeal to retail customers illustrating how well regarded Vauxhall is becoming among brands in the premium sector. The new Movano has also given our CV sales a real boost, helping us achieve one of our best retail market shares ever, totalling 17.77 per cent.”
Vauxhall wowed Paris Motor Show crowds last week when it unveiled the stunning GTC Paris concept, the company’s strongest hint yet of how the Astra Sport Hatch’s replacement may look. The Astra Sports Tourer was also unveiled at the show, and will be seen in UK showrooms at the end of next month.
