…AND THEN THERE WERE TWO…
BMW hybrids are like buses – you wait ages, then two come along at once. The 7 Series ActiveHybrid features the same engine as the X6, but has a higher state of engine tune, and features only one electric motor. In this application, BMW’s 4.4-litre V8 has twin-turbochargers, develops 440bhp, and is boosted by the addition of a 20bhp electric motor. This means a combined system output of 455bhp and maximum torque of 516lb ft. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with the electric motor placed between the engine and the torque converter. Performance is brisk, with the zero to 60mph dash completed in just 4.8 seconds, while the maximum speed of 150mph has been electronically limited. Fuel consumption is said to be improved by 15 per cent, compared to the BMW 750i, and meets the forthcoming Euro V emissions standards.
The 7 Series ActiveHybrid is the first BMW with an automatic gearbox to be fitted with an automatic stop/start system, and will be available in both regular and longwheelbase formats. Like the X6 ActiveHybrid, there are no current plans to import the 7 Series ActiveHybrid into the UK.
