Month four with the A6 Avant and I’m still very satisfied with the A6. In fact, my feelings, thoughts and opinions on the car are almost exactly the same as when it first arrived, which is a rarity. Usually, my opinion of Diesel Car long-termers has changed as time and miles have piled on, both for the good and bad, yet the A6 has remained a constant with me, which is actually rather nice.
It’s not for a lack of driving, as we’re fast approaching the 13,000 mile mark, and a ten-and-a-half hour drive up to Edinburgh, via Luton, certainly stretched the A6’s legs. Apple CarPlay, Spotify and the Bang & Olufsen audio system all playing a major part in keeping me going, but the A6’s knack of fighting off driver fatigue was essential too. With the exception of a McDonald’s breakfast – a road trip tradition – and coffee and toilet stops, we kept going and the journey passed by a lot quicker than the figure on its trip computer. Top marks A6!
After a well-deserved sleep for the car and passengers, we were off to the next stop. However, the A6 emitted a couple of additional chimes when I started the engine. First was a low AdBlue warning, which I thought was pretty good considering the mileage and the thirst some other cars seem to have for the Urea-based liquid. The second chime was a little more surprising, in that it was a plea for engine oil. I’ve had the A6 since there was just 15 miles on the odometer, so I know the car was run in to the letter and how it’s been driven since, so this seems a little heavy on the consumption side. I went looking for a dipstick in the engine bay myself, but couldn’t find one; it’s a digital dipstick you access through a menu in the infotainment system, which, sure enough, said it was actually a tad below minimum. Either way I’ll be making a trip to the nearest dealer to get it checked and replenished.
Did you notice I said ‘additional chimes’ in the previous paragraph? For a week or so, every time the car starts, now I get a softer, so presumably less serious warning. A warning message came up on the screen to say ‘Audi Adaptive Light Fault. Please check Handbook’, which I duly did, but found no matching words. I did the next best thing and Googled the fault, which brought up information about older Audi’s, but nothing for the current range. I’m somewhat confident that a faulty sensor is telling the computer that there’s a problem that doesn’t exist, because the lights are working perfectly, but this will also need checking out by the dealership, who can hopefully get rid of the little orange warning triangle illuminated on the dash – stay tuned!
